Intercultural Learning in the classroom

So much of the focus in intercultural experiences

centers around learning outside of the classroom, but throughout my experiences at University of Portland, I've come to realize that you don't need to travel a great distance to grow.

Intercultural Communication:

This course during my junior year came at a really interesting time. I was busy processing the re-entry to the U.S. after Salzburg and attempting to unpack why it was so difficult to feel adjusted. This essay was our final assignment where I reflected on intercultural experiences and what it means to be a U.S. American.

International Development & Gender:

While many of my courses challenge my thinking, none more so that this one. When I registered for this course I had no idea what to expect but it had international in the course title so I was sold. We unpacked issues like climate change refugees, colonization, women's rights and so much more. It opened my eyes to the fact that while I may see myself as someone who has a lot of cultural humility, there is so much of the world I have barely scratched the surface on. My final project, that I went on to present at the West Coast Communication Association Undergraduate conference, showed the intersectionality of culture, gender and public health. It inspired me to continue to dig into those fields and broaden my scope further than the European countries I've spent time in. I've linked my paper here
